Australia: Most New Students Will Have to Come Without Family — India's Extra Post-Study Year Stays
Announced 17 September: most new international students and graduate-visa applicants will no longer be able to bring a partner or children (PhD, Pacific and ASEAN students are exempt; families already in Australia are not affected). The government also said it will honour trade-deal concessions, so the extra post-study year for Indian graduates remains.
No start date has been published and the measures are being made by regulation, so details can still change.

On 17 Sept, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke announced most new international students (and 485 graduate visa applicants) will no longer be able to bring partners or children. Exceptions: PhD, Pacific and ASEAN students. Families already in Australia are not affected. Measures come by regulation, so start dates and final details can still change — no commencement date has been published.

Graduate Route becomes 18 months for Bachelor's/Master's graduates who apply on or after 1 Jan 2027 (PhD stays 3 years). From 30 Nov 2026 the funds requirement rises to £1,570/month in London and £1,203/month elsewhere, for up to 9 months. The UK also agreed to rejoin Erasmus+ from 2027.

On 14 Sept a federal court in Massachusetts issued a nationwide preliminary injunction against the DHS rule that would have ended 'duration of status' for F-1/J-1 students (fixed admission periods of up to 4 years, 30-day grace period). The current system stays while litigation continues, but an appeal is likely.

IRCC confirmed the PGWP field-of-study list will not change during 2026 (1,107 eligible programmes). Master's and PhD students at public institutions are exempt from the provincial attestation letter. 2027 and 2028 new-arrival targets are set at 150,000 a year.

Immigration NZ will launch a Short-Term Graduate Work Visa on 16 Nov 2026: 6 months of open work rights for graduates of Level 5–7 qualifications (24+ weeks full-time) who don't qualify for a Post-Study Work Visa. Post-Study Work eligibility also extends to Level 7 Graduate Diplomas.
